Rules used: the provident fund contribution rules as Workdome's payroll applies them by default: 12% from the employee and 12% from the employer on the PF wage of basic + DA + special allowance, up to a ₹15,000 ceiling, with EPS at 8.33%, EDLI at 0.5% and the admin charge at 0.5%. Checked against Workdome's own computation on 18 October 2026. Workdome can also charge PF on gross pay less HRA, and a company can change the ceiling, the rounding and the admin minimum; this page uses the basic-wages rule. The Code on Social Security, 2020 and any change to the wage ceiling can alter these figures. This is an estimate for planning, not legal advice.
How it is calculated
Twelve percent each, split three ways on the employer's side
Both the employee and the employer contribute 12% of the PF wage. The employee's 12% all goes to the EPF account. The employer's 12% is split between the pension scheme (EPS) and the EPF account, and the employer also pays EDLI and an admin charge on top.
The contributions
- Employee
- 12% of the PF wage, deducted from salary, to EPF.
- Employer EPS
- 8.33% of the PF wage, never more than 8.33% of the ceiling. That is ₹1,250 at ₹15,000.
- Employer EPF
- The employer's 12% less the EPS share.
- EDLI and admin
- 0.5% of the PF wage each, paid by the employer on top.
The PF wage
- What counts
- Basic pay, dearness allowance and special allowance for the month. HRA, bonus and overtime are left out.
- Ceiling
- ₹15,000 a month. A wage above it is charged as if it were ₹15,000.
- Rounding
- EPF, EPS and EDLI to the nearest rupee, as the ECR return files them. The admin charge stays in paise.
Worked example. Basic ₹12,000 and DA ₹3,000 is a PF wage of ₹15,000. The employee pays 12% = ₹1,800. The employer's 12% is ₹1,800, of which EPS is 8.33% = ₹1,250 and EPF is the remaining ₹550. EDLI is ₹75 and the admin charge ₹75, so the employer pays ₹1,950 a month and the employee ₹1,800.
Questions
PF questions HR teams get asked
What salary is PF calculated on?
On the PF wage: basic pay plus dearness allowance and any special allowance, up to the wage ceiling of ₹15,000 a month. House rent allowance, bonus and overtime are not part of it under this rule. Where the wage is above the ceiling, this calculator charges PF on the ceiling, as Workdome's payroll does by default; contributing on a higher wage is something an employer and employee can agree, and it changes the figures.
How is the employer's 12% split between EPS and EPF?
8.33% of the PF wage goes to the Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS), never more than 8.33% of the ceiling, which is ₹1,250 at ₹15,000. The rest of the employer's 12% goes to the employee's EPF account. The employee's own 12% goes entirely to EPF.
What are EDLI and the admin charge?
Both are paid by the employer on top of the 12% share and are not deducted from the employee. EDLI, the Employees' Deposit Linked Insurance contribution, is 0.5% of the PF wage. The EPF administration charge is also 0.5% of the PF wage.
Why does the calculator round to the nearest rupee?
The monthly ECR return files the EPF, EPS and EDLI figures in whole rupees, so payroll rounds them half up to the rupee. You can switch the calculator to paise to see the unrounded figures; the admin charge stays in paise either way.
Who is not an EPS member?
Membership depends on the employee's history with the fund and the wage when they joined, which this page cannot see. If your employee is not an EPS member, untick the box and the employer's whole 12% goes to EPF. Check the member's status with your PF consultant or on the EPFO portal.
PF, done in the payroll run
Workdome calculates PF for every employee in the run, from the salary structure on file, and prepares the EPFO ECR 2.0 file for you to review, upload and file.
