Rules used: the state slab table in Workdome's payroll, as it applies it in every payroll run: nineteen states, the ₹2,500 annual ceiling under Article 276(2) of the Constitution applied in February, and Kerala's half-yearly slabs. Checked against Workdome's own computation on 18 October 2026. Each state notifies its own slabs and changes them, so a state's current schedule can differ from this table. For a state that is not in it, the page shows what Workdome's payroll would deduct without a table, which is not the state's law. This is an estimate for planning, not legal or tax advice.
How it is calculated
A slab by state, capped across the year
Professional tax is levied by the states, and the employer deducts it from salary. Most states set a slab on the month's gross; the Constitution caps the total any one person can be charged in a year.
The monthly slab
- Slab
- The state's slab that the month's gross falls in gives the month's tax. A gross between two printed slabs, such as ₹15,000.50, pays the upper one.
- No tax
- Workdome's table lists no professional tax for Delhi, Bihar, Goa, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana and Rajasthan.
- Not listed
- For any other state the calculator shows Workdome's fallback, ₹200 once the gross is above ₹15,000, and says it is not the law.
The annual ceiling
- Ceiling
- ₹2,500 a year. February takes the smaller of the month's slab and what is left of the ceiling after the earlier months.
- Kerala
- Charged per half-year, on the half-year's income. The page also shows the spread Workdome can use: the half-year's tax taken over the months left in it.
- Check
- If the table's slabs times eleven already pass the ceiling, the page says so: the slab may be a half-yearly or annual figure.
Worked example. Kerala, gross ₹35,000 in April. The top Kerala slab is ₹208 a month, so April is ₹208. Over a year that is ₹208 × 11 = ₹2,288, and February takes ₹208, which leaves the year at ₹2,496, under the ₹2,500 ceiling.
Questions
Professional tax questions HR teams get asked
Who deducts professional tax, and who pays it?
The employer deducts it from the employee's salary and pays it to the state government. It is a state tax, so the rate and the slabs depend on the state the employee works in, not where the company is registered.
What is the maximum professional tax in a year?
₹2,500 per person per year, the ceiling in Article 276(2) of the Constitution. The calculator applies it in February, so the year never goes past it given what was already deducted.
Why does February sometimes differ?
Some states' monthly slabs add up to less than the annual ceiling, and the February figure is the one that can be adjusted. In this calculator February is the smaller of the slab and the ceiling left after the earlier months.
Why is Kerala different?
Kerala charges professional tax half-yearly, on the half-year's income. A flat monthly figure can under-collect for someone who joined part-way through, so Workdome can instead spread the half-year's liability over the months left. The page shows both.
My state is not in the list. What do I do?
Choose "Another state". The calculator then shows what Workdome's payroll would deduct for a state without a table, ₹200 once the gross is above ₹15,000, which is not that state's law. Use the state's own notification for the real slab.
Can the slabs on this page be out of date?
Yes. States notify new slabs from time to time. This page follows Workdome's table and says the date it was last checked against it. Treat the figure as an estimate and confirm against your state's current schedule before relying on it for a return.
Professional tax, done in payroll
Workdome applies each employee's state table in every run, adjusts February to the annual ceiling, and shows the figure on the payslip and in the statement you use for the return.
